What the report says

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has rejected claims that it is holding discussions with Gen Salim Saleh about securing the release of its leader, Dr Kizza Besigye. In a statement carried by Nile Post, party deputy chief of cabinet Harold Kaija said no senior PFF official has been allowed to meet Besigye since he collapsed in court in late July, making it impossible for the party to negotiate on his behalf without his instruction.

The denial follows recent reporting by New Vision that Saleh was involved in quiet efforts bringing together figures from the ruling National Resistance Movement, opposition circles, religious leaders and other senior people to explore a way forward on Besigye’s case. That account, according to Nile Post, suggested a committee of eminent persons was being formed, though no public agreement or specific terms were disclosed.

PFF said Besigye has already sought bail four times without success and insisted it would continue pursuing legal avenues rather than asking him to apologise or plead for release. The party also urged the State to stop interfering in the process or to withdraw the case. Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, has separately said he has not entered into a plea bargain and should instead be granted bail for medical care.

Besigye has been detained since his arrest in Nairobi in November 2024 and faces treason charges alongside Obeid Lutale and UPDF Capt Denis Oola. The case, now before High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma, remains at the prosecution stage, making any confirmed release deal or withdrawal of charges still unresolved.
