PsyPost reported that a behavioral study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders found that people with higher levels of ADHD-like traits may not gain the usual automatic-learning benefit associated with reduced self-control. The article, published July 25, 2026, says the research examined how deliberate inhibition and unconscious pattern learning interact in people across a spectrum of attention and impulsivity traits.

The study was led by Karolina Horváth of the Gran Canaria Cognitive Research Center at Atlántico Medio University in Spain. Researchers recruited 226 university students for an online experiment, using a self-report questionnaire to assess ADHD-like symptoms. Participants then completed a reaction-time task involving dog and cat images, where they had to respond quickly to target images but withhold responses when a stop signal appeared. A hidden sequence in the image locations allowed researchers to measure statistical learning, a form of unconscious pattern detection.

According to PsyPost, participants with more ADHD-like traits performed worse on the response-inhibition part of the task. In the broader sample, weaker inhibition was generally linked with faster reactions to hidden patterns, suggesting that reduced deliberate control can sometimes support automatic learning. But this advantage faded among participants with higher ADHD traits: despite poorer inhibition, they did not show the same improvement in learning the hidden sequence.

The researchers suggested that highly salient stop cues or mind wandering could disrupt unconscious learning in people with elevated ADHD traits, though the findings are not definitive. PsyPost noted limitations including a mostly young, highly educated sample, a gender imbalance with more than 80% female participants, unsupervised testing on personal computers, and reliance on self-reported symptoms rather than clinical diagnosis.
