‘Pearl Sweet’ puts Uganda’s oil ambitions on global market map

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni on Sept. 2 named Uganda’s crude oil “Pearl Sweet” during a visit to the Kingfisher Development Area in Kikuube District, according to The Independent Uganda. The naming was presented as a symbolic step as Uganda moves closer to commercial oil production after years of delays and infrastructure development. The report said the label reflects both national identity and the crude’s relatively low sulphur content, while also noting that the oil is waxy and requires heated transport systems.
The article said Uganda’s oil sector is now in its final stretch toward first production, with the East African Crude Oil Pipeline seen as central to moving crude from Hoima to Tanzania’s coast. It added that the country has already confirmed 6.5 billion barrels, though Museveni argued more could still be found in the Lake Albert basin. The report also highlighted the roles of CNOOC Uganda at Kingfisher and TotalEnergies at Tilenga, both part of the broader production plan.
Beyond the ceremony, the story framed oil as an economic turning point with major risks and expectations. Uganda’s budget forecasts include petroleum revenue for the 2026/27 financial year, while international lenders and analysts expect oil to boost growth once production starts. At the same time, the report stressed concerns about governance, transparency, job creation and whether oil income will be invested in long-term development rather than short-term spending.
The article also pointed to Uganda’s parallel push for a refinery at Kabaale, which would support domestic fuel supply and value addition, alongside exports through EACOP.
