The meeting followed the envoys’ earlier discussions in Moscow with Vladimir Putin, and took place under heightened wartime symbolism at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, near the site of recent Russian drone strikes on Ukraine’s security services headquarters.

According to the BBC report, both sides described the discussions as substantive and said they were open to further diplomacy, including possible broader trilateral talks involving the US and Europe. However, the core disagreements were unchanged. Putin’s position remained tied to long-standing Russian demands, including territorial concessions, limits on Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and reductions in its armed forces. Ukrainian officials, by contrast, said their forces had made gains on the battlefield and that Russia had suffered heavy losses.

Zelensky said Ukraine would need strong and clear security guarantees and did not indicate any willingness to cede territory in Donbas. Witkoff said progress had been made and that a settlement would require compromise, but the BBC said neither side currently appears ready to make the concessions needed. In Kyiv, the expectation is that fighting will continue through winter, even as diplomats see a possible opening for talks later in 2026. The short pause in air strikes offered some relief to residents, but few expect it to last.
