WLS-TV reports that Patrick Kane is headed back to the Chicago Blackhawks after the team announced Thursday that the veteran winger signed a two-year contract carrying an $8 million salary-cap hit. The move brings one of the franchise’s most recognizable players back to Chicago after time with the New York Rangers and, most recently, three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

Kane spent 16 seasons with the Blackhawks after Chicago selected him No. 1 overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. He arrived the same season as Jonathan Toews and became a central figure in the club’s championship era, helping the team win three Stanley Cups. WLS-TV noted that former Blackhawks player and broadcaster Eddie Olczyk discussed Kane’s return Thursday.

The station reported that Kane’s Blackhawks totals include 446 goals, 779 assists and 1,225 points, placing him second in franchise history behind Stan Mikita’s 1,467 points. His individual honors include the 2008 Calder Trophy, the 2013 Conn Smythe Trophy, and in 2016 both the Hart Memorial Trophy and Art Ross Trophy.

WLS-TV described strong fan reaction at the United Center, with supporters citing nostalgia, his No. 88 jersey’s popularity and the potential influence he could have on a younger roster led by Connor Bedard. The Blackhawks’ home opener is scheduled for Oct. 6 against the St. Louis Blues, and WLS-TV reported that some third-party resale listings already had the lowest-priced seats nearing $200.
