Parliament to Pay Tribute to Tooro King Oyo

Parliament in Uganda has observed a moment of silence for the late Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth saying the House will later hold an official tribute in his honour. The silence was observed during Tuesday’s plenary sitting, as lawmakers marked the death of the cultural leader, who died last week.

According to Nile Post, Speaker Oboth told MPs that the monarch’s passing had created a major gap in both the Tooro Kingdom and the country. He said the late king was seen as a protector of Tooro’s culture and credited him with supporting tourism and raising the kingdom’s profile beyond Uganda. MPs from the Tooro sub-region reportedly asked colleagues to attend the tribute so that Parliament could collectively express respect for the king’s contribution.

The report says the House stood in solidarity with mourners after the announcement. It also notes that King Oyo became Omukama in 1995 at the age of three and was widely described at the time as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. During his reign, he was linked to initiatives around youth empowerment, environmental conservation and tourism.

Nile Post reported that the king’s body was expected to arrive in Uganda on Tuesday, with President Yoweri Museveni among those expected to receive it at Entebbe Airport. The planned parliamentary tribute underlines the late monarch’s national significance as well as his role in Tooro’s cultural identity.
