Parliament Hails Gen Moses Ali as Nationalist and Mentor

Nile Post reported that Uganda’s Parliament held a special sitting on Tuesday to honour Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP, after his death. The veteran soldier and politician, widely associated with the West Nile region, was remembered by leaders from both the ruling National Resistance Movement and the Opposition as a nationalist, mentor and long-serving public figure whose career spanned military, political and constitutional roles.

According to the report, the casket arrived at Parliament at 7:30am and was received by Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth before lying in state in the foyer. The sitting began at 10am, with the casket later taken into the chamber as MPs paid tribute. Oboth-Oboth credited President Yoweri Museveni with having appointed Ali to senior offices over the years, while Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja moved the motion for Parliament to formally honour him.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi seconded the motion and urged public leaders to uphold constitutional order and integrity in service, drawing from Ali’s record. Vice President Jessica Alupo described him as a disciplined military officer and mentor to younger leaders. Other leaders, including First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, also praised his public service, peace-building role and commitment to West Nile’s development.

Nile Post reported that Ali was due to be buried on Wednesday in Adjumani District. The outlet also noted that he was the second member of the 12th Parliament to die, following former Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli. The tributes highlighted Ali’s place in Uganda’s post-independence political and military history, while Parliament’s resolution underscored his significance to national governance.
