Parliament approves motion on geriatric care, demands increase in SAGE

What the report says
Parliament in Uganda has approved a motion urging stronger geriatric healthcare and better social protection for older people, while pressing government to follow through on a promised increase in the Senior Citizens Grant for the Elderly, or SAGE, from Shs25,000 to Shs35,000 a month. According to Watchdog Uganda, the motion was moved on Tuesday, 18 August 2026 by Sironko District Woman Representative Asha Mafabi amid concerns that many older persons cannot easily access specialised care or the support intended for them.
The debate highlighted gaps between the announced grant increase and the funding available in the 2026/27 national budget. Minister of State for Elderly Affairs Jacqueline Mbabazi said the higher payment had not been included in the budget, but argued government still needed to find the money because older persons are supporting large numbers of dependants. MPs also raised questions about the cost and reach of SAGE, with concerns over long travel distances to collect payments and the heavy share of funds used for administration.
Lawmakers called for dedicated geriatric units, trained health workers, age-friendly facilities, and more home-based and community care, especially in rural areas. The article says Uganda has more than 1.4 million people aged 60 and above, many living with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cancer and dementia. Government officials said they are discussing training and broader policy options, including possible university-based geriatric programmes and integration of elder care into national development plans.
