BBC News reports that Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery have agreed to put their proposed $110bn merger on hold while a US court considers legal challenges to the deal. Under the agreement, the two Hollywood companies will continue operating independently and competing with each other until a final ruling is issued, or until 1 June 2027 if the case has not been resolved by then.

The pause follows lawsuits brought by 12 US states and the Writers Guild of America, which contend that combining the studios would weaken competition and could mean higher costs for consumers. BBC reports that the legal freeze also means emergency court hearings have been cancelled. Lawyers for the parties are due to submit a proposed trial timetable by 31 July.

Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery argue that a merger is needed to compete more effectively with major streaming platforms and large technology companies. Paramount described the agreement as giving the case a clearer route to trial, where it says it can show the transaction would benefit competition, audiences and creators. The company has also said it would increase its annual cinema releases to 30 films.

Opponents, including state officials and Hollywood unions, say the tie-up would concentrate too much power in one company, narrowing opportunities for writers, crews and viewers. The BBC notes that the US Department of Justice approved the transaction in June, while European regulators recently cleared it on the condition that Paramount end a significant regional film distribution arrangement with Universal Pictures.
