Paramount and Warner Bros mega merger paused by judge

BBC World News reported that a US federal judge has temporarily halted the proposed merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery, a deal valued at about $110bn (£85bn). The order came after 12 US states, including California and New York, sued to stop the transaction, arguing that combining the two media companies could reduce competition and increase costs for consumers.

According to the BBC, lawyers for the states said the merger could significantly damage movie theatres, basic cable distributors and audiences. Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery countered that the states were taking too narrow a view of the media market and said the combination would make their streaming operations more efficient.

US district judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín issued a 14-day temporary restraining order on Monday after hearing legal arguments the previous week. The injunction prevents the companies from closing the deal or beginning integration work. In the ruling, she said the states had raised serious antitrust questions, particularly around movie distribution, and warned that allowing the merger to advance could make it very difficult to reverse if the court later blocked it.

The case matters because the deal would unite two of Hollywood’s best-known studios after decades as rivals, bringing franchises such as Harry Potter, Batman, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun under one corporate umbrella, along with major TV brands including CNN, MTV and Nickelodeon. The BBC reported that further court hearings are expected in August.
