Palace hold talks with ex-Arsenal defender Tomiyasu

BBC Sport reports that Crystal Palace have held discussions with Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu about a permanent contract, with the former Arsenal player currently training with the club. The 27-year-old was also listed among the substitutes for Palace’s pre-season friendly against Lens on Tuesday.

According to the report, Tomiyasu could join Palace on a free transfer if head coach Pierre Sage decides to proceed, with a broad agreement on contract terms understood to be in place. BBC Sport says Sage is expected to use a three-centre-back system next season, and Tomiyasu is being considered as an option on the left side of that defensive unit.

The report notes that Palace are assessing Tomiyasu’s fitness because of recent knee problems, despite being confident in his ability. Tomiyasu left Arsenal by mutual consent last season and later joined Ajax, where BBC Sport says he made eight appearances late in the campaign. The article also says he played three matches for Japan at the 2026 World Cup.

The potential move comes as Palace look to add defensive cover, with Maxence Lacroix expected to join Chelsea. BBC Sport says Palace have made at least one offer for Augsburg centre-back Chrislain Matsima, with talks ongoing over a possible €30m (£25.7m) deal, and also retain interest in Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong and Brest defender Raphael le Guen.
