Over 1,600 Receive Free Dental Care in Tororo Rotary Outreach

What the report says
Nile Post reports that more than 1,600 people in Tororo District received free dental services during a five-day outreach organised by Rotary clubs from Uganda and Europe in partnership with SmileStar UK. The camp was conducted at selected health facilities in the district and drew children, adults and elderly residents seeking help for oral health problems, including extractions and other dental complications.
According to the report, SmileStar UK founder Dr Mitesh Badiani said the outreach was designed to respond to two major barriers to dental care in Uganda: limited access to dentists, especially in rural communities, and the cost of treatment. Stephen Owori, chairperson of the Sam Owori Foundation, said the exercise helped residents who may otherwise have been unable to receive care. Rotary Club of Kampala President Shem Nsubuga described the camp as part of Rotary’s broader work to improve access to health services.
Tororo District Health Officer Dr Jagire Onyango used the outreach to point to a wider public health gap, saying the district has only one public dental officer serving its population. That shortage, officials indicated, makes routine and timely oral healthcare difficult for many residents.
The report also noted advice from dental professionals linking some dental disease to high sugar consumption. Health experts encouraged regular check-ups, better oral hygiene and reduced sugar intake, particularly in communities where professional dental services remain scarce. The outreach matters because it provided immediate treatment while also drawing attention to long-term staffing and prevention challenges in local oral healthcare.
