Oregon health officials investigate local cyclical outbreaks during lettuce recall - KTVZ

KTVZ reported that the Oregon Health Authority is reviewing two Cyclospora infections in Oregon residents that are connected to a wider multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak and a national recall of pre-shredded iceberg lettuce products. The report, published July 24 from Portland, said the lettuce products were voluntarily recalled on July 17, but had not been reported as distributed in Oregon.

According to KTVZ, state health officials said the current risk to the public in Oregon is low. Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause intestinal illness, and the infection is not passed directly from one person to another. Oregon records cyclosporiasis cases annually, but KTVZ noted that local cases are usually associated with recent international travel rather than a national foodborne outbreak.

The Oregon Health Authority has recorded 23 cyclosporiasis cases in the state so far in 2026, a level KTVZ described as in line with recent years. The state reported 26 cases in 2025, 30 in 2024, 10 in 2023, eight in 2022 and 14 in 2021. Officials expect more Oregon cases may be tied to the federal outbreak, including among people who traveled to affected areas or if additional implicated products are identified.

KTVZ reported that health officials advised residents to reduce foodborne illness risk through standard precautions, including frequent hand and surface washing, rinsing fresh produce under running water before preparation or eating, and cooking foods to appropriate temperatures.
