The Verge reviewed the Telepathic Instruments Orchid, a $649 digital synth/chord instrument developed with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, describing it as a modern revival of vintage electric chord organs. Published July 19, 2026, the review by Terrence O’Brien frames Orchid as a tool for songwriters who want quick, full-sounding chord progressions without advanced keyboard technique or deep music theory knowledge.

According to The Verge, Orchid echoes the look and spirit of 1960s and 1970s home chord organs from brands such as Magnus and Bontempi, but replaces their mechanical limitations with a digital chord engine. Users can combine a one-octave keyboard with chord-type buttons for major, minor, diminished, seventh and other harmonies, and can lock playing to a key so progressions remain musically coherent. The device also includes strum, harp and arpeggiator-style performance modes, including a “slop” setting that adds timing variation.

The review says Orchid offers three synth engines, 70 built-in presets, a separate bass section, MIDI controller support, a looper and a simple drum machine inspired by older preset rhythm boxes. O’Brien praised the instrument as charming, easy to play, varied in sound and enjoyable, giving it an 8 Verge Score.

The main drawbacks cited are its price relative to its limits, the one-octave keyboard, restricted polyphony and limited sound editing on the device itself. The Verge noted that deeper patch creation requires Telepathic Instruments’ Pistil software, which costs extra unless bundled at a discount, and the reviewer said that software had some reliability issues during use.
