MacRumors reported that OpenAI’s consumer hardware plans now center on a first device: a portable, screenless AI smart speaker being developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The article says the product is intended as an in-home companion rather than a traditional voice assistant, with a rechargeable battery, a camera to interpret surroundings, and moving mechanical elements meant to make it feel more expressive. MacRumors says it is expected in early 2027, after slipping from an earlier target, with a projected price of about $200 to $300.

According to the report, the speaker would run on ChatGPT and use OpenAI’s GPT-Live voice technology for conversation. It is said to handle smart-home control, questions, media playback and message responses, while becoming more personalized over time. MacRumors also reported that OpenAI does not view Apple’s HomePod products as direct equivalents.

The article also describes a possible OpenAI smartphone, citing supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The phone is described as an “AI agent” device built around continuous context rather than app-by-app use. MacRumors says it may use a customized MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chip, with Luxshare Precision Industry as the likely manufacturing partner, and could enter mass production in the first half of 2027. Kuo reportedly estimated combined 2027 and 2028 shipments could reach around 30 million units if development proceeds as planned.

MacRumors added that smart glasses, a smart lamp and possibly earbuds are further out in OpenAI’s pipeline, though some may not ship. The effort follows OpenAI’s reported $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s io Products and heavy hiring from Apple. The article says Apple has sued OpenAI over alleged trade-secret theft, while OpenAI denies interest in other companies’ trade secrets.
