Only four speeches allowed at Omukama Oyo’s final send-off

The Independent Uganda reports that the final send-off for Tooro King Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV in Fort Portal will feature only four official speeches, part of an effort to keep the burial ceremony on a traditional early-afternoon timetable. The speakers listed are Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, royal princess and the King’s sister Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, Babiito royal clan head Charles Kamurasi, and the President or a representative. The main Mass will be led by Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, with assistance from Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese Reuben Kisembo.

Burial organisers said the programme will be tightly managed to remain orderly and respectful of Tooro customs. Richard Rwabuhinga, co-chair of the organising committee, said other mourners who want to address the gathering will be given a chance on Friday before the burial. Access to the royal burial ground at Karambi will be limited to immediate family members and senior government officials, while others will observe from a distance.

The report says mourners are expected to walk about six kilometres from St John’s Cathedral to Karambi, with a limited convoy of vehicles escorting the king’s body. The number of vehicles is capped at 30. The arrangements are intended to preserve the solemnity of the rites while managing the large turnout expected.

The article also notes that FUFA has paid tribute to King Oyo for supporting football and young talent, with federation president Moses Magogo Hassan praising his presence at Uganda Cranes matches. King Oyo died in September 2026 after more than 30 years on the throne, and his burial is being held at the royal tombs in Karambi, Fort Portal.
