One dead, 14 injured as car reportedly strikes crowd at Berlin LGBTQ event

Al Jazeera, citing AP, dpa and Reuters, reported that one person was killed and at least 14 others were injured late Saturday after German police said a car was believed to have driven into people near Berlin’s LGBTQ Pride celebrations. The incident occurred in the Tiergarten area, close to the route of the Christopher Street Day parade, a major annual event in the German capital.

Police ended the event after it had been under way for several hours and urged attendees to leave the area immediately. Authorities said some of the injured had life-threatening wounds, while emergency crews treated victims at the scene. A vehicle was found abandoned in Tiergarten Park, and police said they were searching for whoever had been inside it. Police spokesman Florian Nath said in a video posted on X that an intensive search for suspects was under way.

According to the report, officers were examining the area between Potsdamer Platz and the southern side of the Tiergarten tunnel as part of the evidence search. The Pride programme near Brandenburg Gate was stopped at about 10:15 p.m. local time, interrupting a stage performance, and people were told to avoid travelling through Tiergarten.

The incident disrupted one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ celebrations, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators. Before the crash, the parade had proceeded peacefully through the city, with music, dancing and about 80 floats. Police had not immediately provided further details on the cause of the incident or the identity of any suspect.
