Android Police’s Andrew Myrick examined Google’s planned “Googlebook” and argued that its success will depend less on the idea itself than on how clearly Google distinguishes it from existing Chromebooks. The article, published July 25, 2026, frames the device as a new hardware line and software platform built around “Gemini Intelligence,” while noting that Google’s own images and explanations still make it look very close to ChromeOS.

The piece places the Googlebook in the longer history of Chromebooks, from Google’s Cr-48 pilot device in 2010 and the first retail models from Samsung and Acer in 2011 to the later Chromebook Pixel and the arrival of Android app support through the Play Store in 2016. Android Police notes that Chromebooks became especially important in education, and cites market research saying education represented 60.1% of global Chromebook share in 2025.

Myrick also highlights Google’s recent push to improve Chromebook perception, including the 2023 launch of Chromebook Plus, and the growing role of AI features on ChromeOS. The article says AI on Chromebooks has been limited by cloud dependence and modest hardware, but points to Lenovo’s 2025 Chromebook Plus 14 and MediaTek’s Kompanio Ultra 910 chip as steps toward more capable on-device processing.

The main uncertainty, according to Android Police, is whether Googlebook and Chromebook can coexist for long.
