Oman talking with Tehran on Hormuz as US and Iran continue strikes

Al Jazeera reported that an Omani delegation arrived in Tehran late Friday for talks with Iranian officials on how shipping could be managed through the Strait of Hormuz, as fighting between the United States and Iran continued. Citing Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the report said the visit was part of continuing consultations between Oman and Iran. Iran’s Foreign Ministry also said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.

No specific proposals were disclosed. Al Jazeera said Tehran has argued during the war that it is willing to coordinate management of the waterway with Oman, while the US and Gulf states have opposed that arrangement. Oman is significant because it sits at the entrance and exit of the strait and has often served as a mediator while maintaining relations with both Iran and Gulf countries. Albusaidi separately wrote on X that key waterways should stay open for navigation and trade.

The Strait of Hormuz has become central to the conflict because its closure has driven up global energy prices, according to the report. Al Jazeera said about 20 percent of oil and gas exports moved through the strait before the war. The latest diplomacy follows the collapse of a previous pause in fighting, which the outlet said broke down partly over disagreements about freedom of navigation.

Al Jazeera also reported continued military activity, including Iranian claims of attacks on US bases in the region and US Central Command saying it had finished air strikes on Iran. Iranian media reported injuries in several cities, while Iran’s Health Ministry said recent US attacks had killed at least 55 people and wounded nearly 650.
