Oman evacuates injured crew from attacked tanker in Strait of Hormuz

What the report says
Oman says it has evacuated injured crew members from the Panamanian-flagged tanker On Peace after the vessel was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, about 9 nautical miles off the Omani port city of Limah, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing Oman’s Ministry of Defence. The attack sparked a fire on board, and the Omani air force transferred 10 crew members to Khasab hospital in Musandam governorate for treatment.
India’s Foreign Ministry said at least 12 of the ship’s 19 crew members were injured when a projectile hit the tanker as it passed through the strait. It said 17 of the 19 crew were Indian nationals, including 11 of the injured. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
The attack comes amid rising concern over shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy traffic. Al Jazeera noted that tensions in the region have increased during the wider US-Israel war on Iran, and that there have been multiple recent incidents involving tankers. As background, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints, so any disruption there can affect freight movement and energy prices. Al Jazeera also reported that oil exports from the Middle East have recently returned to pre-war levels even as market prices remain elevated.
