Old Mutual rolls out unit trust campaign to boost investment culture

What the report says
Old Mutual Investment Group Uganda (OMIG) has launched a new campaign in Kampala to encourage Ugandans to save and invest more deliberately through professionally managed unit trusts. The initiative, themed “Your Money Is Serious Business,” is meant to improve public understanding of collective investment schemes and promote long-term financial planning. OMIG says the campaign is aimed at salaried workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners and existing investors seeking structured ways to grow wealth.
The Observer reports that unit trusts pool money from multiple investors and are managed across diversified assets by licensed fund managers, allowing people to access professional oversight without having to choose investments themselves. OMIG says it offers Money Market, Balanced, Dollar and Umbrella funds. The company also says investors can begin with as little as Shs 100,000 and use the OMIG Wealth App or Old Mutual online platform to open accounts, deposit or withdraw funds, and monitor performance.
The campaign comes against a backdrop of growth in Uganda’s collective investment sector. The article cites Capital Markets Authority Uganda data showing assets under management of Shs 1.15 trillion and 32,998 investor accounts by November 2024. OMIG says the effort is intended to make investing feel more accessible and transparent, rather than limited to wealthy or highly specialized investors. In general, such campaigns can be significant because they help broaden participation in formal financial markets and encourage disciplined saving habits.
