Ogora Clan Chief Urges Leaders to Resolve Disputes Locally

Dokolo, Uganda — Canon Richard Ogwang Odyero, the Awitong of Ogora Clan, called on clan leaders to handle disputes through traditional channels rather than sending more cases to court. According to Dokolo Post, he made the appeal on Saturday during a visit to Ogora Clan members at Otolemomoleo in Dokolo Town Council, where he met elders, clan leaders and other members living in the area.

Ogwang Odyero said local structures should be used first for disagreements such as land conflicts, marriage issues and other family misunderstandings. He argued that drawn-out court battles can deepen divisions and place a heavy financial burden on poorer families. He also encouraged men who have lived with women for years to formalise their unions early, saying this could help avoid complications tied to customary obligations if a partner dies before the relationship is legally or traditionally recognised.

The clan chief also linked social stability with household development, urging families to keep children in school, work hard and plant trees around their homes. Other speakers echoed the message of unity. Joseph Amuli of Egoria Clan pledged cooperation between the clans, while Dokolo North MP Joseph Jones Ogwal said he would support a youth football tournament to strengthen clan cohesion.

The event also included the unveiling of an ambulance for Dokolo North and blood pressure screening for more than 50 people. In broader context, Uganda’s clan and customary institutions often play a role in mediation and community organisation, especially in rural areas, alongside formal legal systems.
