What the report says
NFL.com reported Tuesday, July 28, that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield arrived at training camp without a contract extension, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo said a deal was not expected before the team’s first practice Wednesday. Mayfield is entering the final season of his current contract and had previously set the start of training camp as a deadline for negotiations.
The update came as part of NFL.com’s leaguewide training camp roundup, which also highlighted several major contract moves. Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward agreed to a two-year, $62.2 million extension, reported by Rapoport as making him the highest-paid defensive back in league history for a second time. The Philadelphia Eagles also reached a reported four-year, $152 million extension with defensive tackle Jalen Carter, worth up to $160 million with $106 million guaranteed, according to ESPN. Minnesota announced a four-year extension for offensive tackle Brian O’Neill, reportedly valued at $96 million.
In injury and roster news, the roundup said Houston Texans receiver Tank Dell was not placed on the physically unable to perform list despite being sidelined since Week 16 of the 2024 season with a major knee injury. Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said defensive end Maxx Crosby is ready for camp, while the Raiders will open with Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback. Pittsburgh listed cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey on the PUP list, with Ramsey expected to miss a couple of weeks.
The roundup underscores the mix of contract deadlines, injury management and depth-chart decisions that shape NFL training camps before preseason games begin.
