Nyombi Thembo Blames Workplace Indiscipline for Business Failures

What the report says
Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director Nyombi Thembo used remarks at Roke Telkom’s 20th anniversary event in Bugolobi, Kampala, to argue that workplace indiscipline is a major reason many local businesses struggle or fail. According to Nile Post, he said poor staff conduct, dishonesty and weak commitment can undermine otherwise viable companies, and that employers need stronger internal management systems to support sustainable growth.
Thembo said businesses often do not collapse because of flawed ideas alone, but because employees do not consistently uphold professionalism and responsibility. He urged workers to avoid dishonest practices and to show greater loyalty to the organisations that employ them. He also stressed that customers and staff are both central to a company’s survival: customers provide the market, while employees carry out day-to-day operations and turn management plans into results.
The UCC chief encouraged business owners to focus not only on expansion but also on building internal capacity and workplace discipline. He linked the comments to broader pressures facing locally established firms in a competitive market, especially in sectors where sustainability depends on operational stability and trust.
Thembo also reaffirmed UCC’s support for homegrown telecommunications companies through regulation, infrastructure sharing and fair market practices. The anniversary event was attended by UCC’s director for economic regulation, content and consumer affairs, Julianne R. Mweheire, together with Roke Telkom founders, management and staff.
