Nyamutoro Champions Environmental Protection as Kucwiny Marks National Cleaning Day

State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro led residents and local leaders in Kucwiny Sub-county, in Uganda’s Nebbi District, during the Second National Cleaning Day on Saturday, according to Nile Post. The activity included cleaning trading centres and homesteads, with Nyamutoro using the occasion to urge households to treat environmental protection as a daily duty rather than a one-off campaign.

Nile Post reported that Nyamutoro said cleaner surroundings support better health and broader development, and that environmental care should not be left to government alone. She was joined by local leaders to set an example for residents, while community members took part in clearing their areas. The report said the initiative is part of a national government effort to encourage regular sanitation, improve waste management and reduce blocked drainage.

Local officials and residents welcomed the exercise. Kucwiny Sub-county LC III chairperson Robert Kumakech praised the National Cleaning Day programme, saying it was helping improve hygiene in rural communities and address waste problems that had affected public spaces. Senior citizen Charles Okello also said Nyamutoro’s presence motivated people to take the exercise more seriously.

The Nile Post story placed the event in the wider context of public health and environmental concerns in Uganda, including preventable disease, poor waste disposal and climate-related pressures. The ministry has previously linked dirty environments to avoidable illness, and the next cleaning day is expected to focus on schools and health centres in the district.
