NWSC promises Package 2B will resolve Greater Kampala’s water gap

National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) says its Package 2B network expansion, rehabilitation and re-zoning works are intended to ease recurring water shortages across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and help deliver the full output of the Katosi drinking water treatment plant. The Independent Uganda reported that NWSC managing director Eng. Dr Silver Mugisha toured the project sites in north and west Kampala and pressed contractors and consultants to keep the works on schedule, within budget and ready for phased commissioning.

The project includes new transmission mains, reservoirs, booster stations and upgrades to the Kampala Water SCADA control system. NWSC said the works, formally known as the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the GKMA Water Supply Network Project, are being financed mainly by the French Development Agency, with support from the EU, the European Investment Bank and Germany’s KfW. The contract is worth about €92.4 million and is being delivered by Sogea Satom under ARTELIA–Gauff supervision. NWSC said overall progress is about 35%, with some components more advanced than others.

A key early milestone is a 7.7-kilometre bulk pipeline from Namugongo through Bulindo, Nsasa and Mulawa to the Kira–Kasangati road, which NWSC says should be ready from December 2026. The utility said this would improve supply in Namugongo, Kira, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa and Kasangati before the full project is completed in 2027. NWSC added that the broader upgrade is needed because rapid population growth in Kampala and Wakiso has increased pressure on ageing and unevenly distributed infrastructure.
