Nvidia is sending GPUs to the moon - TechCrunch

What the report says
TechCrunch reported that Nvidia’s Jetson chips are set to be used on a Lunar Outpost moon rover, potentially making them the first GPU-powered system to operate on the lunar surface. Lunar Outpost, a startup developing robotics for space infrastructure, said its next rover will use Jetson hardware to help control its lidar system. CEO Justin Cyrus told TechCrunch the company is comparing Jetson with a more space-proven flight computing platform as it evaluates whether more capable GPU-based systems can function in extreme environments.
The rover is expected to fly aboard a lander built by Intuitive Machines and is designed to carry sensors into craters and other areas hard to examine from orbit. TechCrunch also reported that a later Lunar Outpost mission will study Reiner Gamma, a lunar magnetic anomaly, with each mission expected to launch on a Falcon 9 before the end of the year. Separately, Nvidia has announced work with Firefly Aerospace to use Jetson on a satellite orbiting the moon to process imagery for mapping and monitoring lunar robots.
The development matters because local processing could help space robots interpret sensor data and make faster decisions without relying heavily on Earth-based control. That capability is central to NASA’s broader push to use private companies for lunar exploration before a planned astronaut return, possibly around 2028.
TechCrunch noted that GPUs face difficult conditions beyond Earth orbit, including radiation, major temperature swings and the need to survive lunar night on limited power. Lunar Outpost is also planning larger systems, including its Pegasus rover intended for astronauts, though that mission depends on a Blue Origin rocket whose return-to-flight timing remains unclear.
