NUP’s Katongole Petitions Court to Overturn Kabugo’s Lubaga III LCV Victory

What the report says
National Unity Platform candidate Julius Katongole has petitioned the Mengo Court to challenge National Resistance Movement candidate Bonny Kabugo’s win in the Lubaga III Local Council V election, according to Nile Post. Katongole, also known as Mumiransanafu, is asking the court to nullify Kabugo’s victory and either order a fresh election or direct a recount of the ballots.
The dispute was heard before Mwanga II Court in Mengo, with Magistrate Joseph Kwesiga presiding. The two sides appeared through their lawyers, and both agreed to have their arguments submitted in writing alongside documentary evidence. Katongole is represented by Jude Mbabaali, while Kabugo is represented by Michael Kintu.
The petition concerns a seat covering areas including Najjanankumbi, Nateete and Lubaga. As reported by Nile Post, the court has set October 15, 2026, for the matter to resume, when proceedings are expected to continue. Until the court makes a ruling, Kabugo’s declared victory remains in force.
Election petitions are a common feature of post-poll disputes in Uganda, where losing candidates often ask courts to review results, order recounts, or call for fresh voting. In this case, the judge will weigh the parties’ evidence and submissions before deciding whether the election outcome should stand.
