NUP launches village campaigns in Masaka ahead of LC I elections

Nile Post reported that the National Unity Platform has begun grassroots mobilisation in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City, ahead of the forthcoming Local Council One chairperson and village women committee elections. The party is asking residents to back candidates it says will focus on accountability, community development and service delivery at village level.

According to the report, the launch took place in Kibissi Parish, Kadduggala, and was led by Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Mayor Ronald Kasekende alongside NUP leaders and candidates for village posts. The team campaigned in several areas, including Kibissi A, Kinyerere A, Kinyerere B, Namagoma, Mirembe and Katera, using rallies and door-to-door mobilisation to reach voters.

Kasekende urged voters to support NUP flag bearers, arguing that village leadership is central to handling local disputes, mobilising residents for development programmes and connecting communities to higher levels of government. He also called for peaceful participation and said voters should be free to choose leaders without intimidation. Nile Post said NUP candidates pledged transparency and improved services, with Fred Zziwa Kunsa Kewerimidde, the party’s candidate for LC I chairperson in Katera Village, naming sanitation, community security, youth support and fair access to government programmes among his priorities.

The report said residents at the meetings welcomed the candidates and appealed for calm campaigns. More broadly, LC I and village women committee elections are an important tier of Uganda’s local governance system, and the contests are expected to draw candidates from political parties and independents as mobilisation intensifies across the country.
