Nubian Li faces backlash over Shs5,000 offertory at Kapere’s funeral

What the report says
Musicians Mathias Walukagga, Aziz Azion and Ali Bukeni, widely known as Nubian Li, have faced online criticism after videos from comedian Yokana Mbuuse’s funeral service circulated on social media. The clips showed the amount each of them placed in the offertory during the worship portion of the ceremony, but some users appeared to confuse those church offerings with direct funeral contributions.
According to Sqoop Uganda, the funeral service for Mbuuse, also called Kapere, took place on Monday at the National Unity Platform headquarters in Kavule, where friends, relatives and entertainment figures gathered to pay their respects. In the videos, Walukagga is seen offering Shs20,000, Aziz Azion Shs10,000 and Nubian Li Shs5,000. The publication said the amounts shown were offertory for the church service, not money given toward burial arrangements.
The response online was strongest toward Nubian Li, who also serves as Nakawa Division Mayor, with some commenters arguing that his public role meant he should have given more. Sqoop Uganda reported that it is not known how much, if anything, the three entertainers may have contributed separately to the funeral itself. The episode reflects a broader tendency on social media to judge public acts of giving without full context, especially during high-profile mourning events.
