Ntungamo to get presidential industrial skilling hub at Obuyora

Ntungamo District has approved 75 hectares of land at Obuyora in Rubaare Town Council for a new Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub, according to Nile Post. The decision follows President Yoweri Museveni’s approval of additional hubs for the Ankole and Greater Masaka subregions and is intended to widen access to vocational training for young people in the district.

The report says the Obuyora site had long remained underused after the closure and gradual phasing out of Ntungamo Teachers College, leaving the government property in a state of neglect. District leaders had previously discussed other possible uses for the land, including a farming institute, but the skilling hub plan has now given the site a new role. Local officials said this also helps address concerns about wasted public investment and possible encroachment.

The hub is expected to ease pressure on the wider Ankole Industrial Skilling Hub, where only a small number of Ntungamo residents previously managed to train. MPs Moses Kahima and Naome Kabasharira welcomed the development, saying it should improve opportunities for local youth. The district expects training to begin around December, with courses likely to include carpentry, tailoring, building, mechanics, welding, plumbing and hairdressing, along with start-up support for graduates. In general, such hubs are meant to equip young people with practical skills for self-employment and local enterprise.
