Ntungamo's Shs200m Akabaale Bridge nears completion as leaders seek more funds for road upgrade

Construction of the Akabaale Bridge in Ntungamo District is nearing completion, according to Nile Post, bringing relief to residents of Ruhaama and Rushenyi counties who have long depended on a risky crossing over the River Rufuha extension. The project, valued at Shs200 million, is replacing an ageing wooden bridge that community members say became especially dangerous during rainy periods, when flooding often cut off movement between Ngoma and Rwekiniro sub-counties.

The report says some residents still avoid the old structure, with pedestrians, women carrying children and boda boda riders continuing to use the crossing cautiously while construction continues. Local leaders say the new bridge has been welcomed because it should improve access to markets, schools and health services, which have been difficult to reach when the river swells.

At a monitoring visit, Rushenyi County MP Naome Kabasharira said the bridge fulfills a long-standing promise to the area and noted that she had secured the initial funding from the Ministry of Finance. She is now seeking an additional Shs200 million to improve the road linking Kashenyi to Rwekiniro, saying the bridge alone will not solve the transport challenge. Residents and local officials echoed that view, arguing that road upgrades are needed for the project to deliver its full benefit.

If completed as planned, the bridge and connecting road works are expected to ease travel for farmers, traders, schoolchildren and patients, while reducing the safety risks that have affected the area for years.
