Ntinda building collapse kills one, injures another

What the report says
One person was killed and another injured when a multi-storey building under construction collapsed onto a residential house along Stretcher Road in Ntinda, Nakawa Division, Kampala. The Observer reported that the deceased was Serose Katusiime, 50, who had been selling maize near the site when the structure gave way. Her body was recovered from the debris, while the injured survivor was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala said the collapse happened around midnight and may have trapped additional people under the rubble. By Monday afternoon, rescue teams were still clearing debris and searching for anyone else who might have been caught inside, including construction workers who may have been in the building at the time. Police said they were still at the scene working to establish what happened and whether more victims remained trapped.
The incident comes amid wider concern about building safety in Uganda. According to background cited by The Observer from the National Building Review Board, structural failures have repeatedly been recorded in recent years, with earlier investigations pointing to issues such as unapproved plans, unqualified personnel, poor workmanship and substandard materials. The cause of the Ntinda collapse had not yet been determined in the report.
