NRM Sweeps Clean 99% of District Women Council Positions

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) says it has won 575 of the 580 district-level Women Council committee positions contested in its recent internal elections, a result the party’s Electoral Commission described as a strong showing at the grassroots. According to the Nile Post report, the five remaining seats went to independent candidates, while opposition candidates did not win any district-level positions. The figures give the ruling party a 98.5 percent success rate in the contested posts.

NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Tanga Odoi said the party was now shifting attention to the next phase of the Women Council polls at national level. He said the commission would brief the public again on Tuesday and warned aspirants to avoid sectarian, ethnic or inflammatory campaigning. Odoi also cautioned against intimidation, bribery and ethnic mobilisation, saying candidates who breach party rules could face action.

The report also says the NRM Electoral Commission has started updating its voters’ register ahead of parliamentary and local government by-elections in Adjumani West Constituency. The two-day exercise began on Monday, August 31, and runs through Tuesday, September 1, with village meetings planned to review the register. New registrants are required to prove residence in Adjumani West, and residents from neighbouring Adjumani East were warned not to register there. The party says the register update and forthcoming primaries are part of its broader internal electoral process ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
