NRM Sets September 3 Primary to Pick Adjumani West MP Candidate

The National Resistance Movement has set September 3, 2026, as the date for its internal primary to choose a flag bearer for the vacant Adjumani West parliamentary seat. The party is moving first in the race to replace Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, whose death in July led to the seat being declared vacant ahead of the by-election scheduled by the Electoral Commission.

According to Nile Post, the NRM Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr Tanga Odoi, announced the roadmap on Tuesday, August 11. Interested aspirants began expressing interest on August 10, with nomination forms to be collected and submitted at the party’s Electoral Commission headquarters. The party has also set August 17 and 18 for nomination exercises, while August 20 to 31 are reserved for updating and cleaning the party register before the primary.

The Electoral Commission has separately scheduled polling for the Adjumani West by-election on September 17, 2026. Its programme includes display of the voters’ register at polling stations from August 17 to 26, parliamentary nominations on September 7 and 8, and campaigns from September 9 to 15. The commission also set September 16 for the election of a Female Older Persons Councillor for Pachara Sub-county, another vacant post.

The NRM said aspirants must be Ugandan citizens, registered NRM members and registered voters, with at least an A-Level qualification and no service in the armed forces, police, prisons, or government-owned institutions. The party’s primary will determine who carries the ruling party’s banner in a constituency that has become politically significant after the loss of a long-serving legislator.
