NRM’s Nekesa urges teachers to promote sciences at Iganga Progressive

What the report says
NRM National Treasurer Barbara Nekesa Oundo used a visit to Iganga Progressive Secondary School to encourage teachers to give greater attention to science subjects and patriotic values as Senior Four and Senior Six candidates prepare for final examinations. According to Nile Post, she said Uganda needs more professionals in STEM fields, including engineers, scientists and mathematics experts, to support national development and public finances.
Nekesa delivered the remarks during dedication prayers for the candidates, where she also praised the school for nurturing leadership and promoting patriotism among learners. She linked patriotism to national unity and said a stronger sense of belonging could help reduce sectarianism. She also prayed for the students to perform well and asked school leaders to keep supporting learners spiritually and academically.
The event was attended by parents, teachers, clergy and district leaders, who urged the students to stay disciplined and focused. Nekesa also appealed to school heads to let students with unpaid fees sit for examinations, saying payment issues can be settled later. In turn, headteacher Senyonga Umar asked for more support with laboratory equipment, chemicals and computers, saying the school needs better resources for science practicals and ICT learning.
The report reflects broader concerns in Uganda about improving science education and exam preparedness in secondary schools, especially as institutions work to strengthen practical learning and infrastructure.
