NRM’s Kananura blames military deployment for Kira MP seat loss

What the report says
Daniel Kananura, the National Resistance Movement candidate in the January 2026 Kira Municipality election, told the High Court in Wakiso that a large military and security presence on polling day contributed to his loss to opposition National Unity Platform MP George Musisi, according to The Observer. Kananura is asking the court to overturn Musisi’s victory and either order a fresh election or a vote recount.
Appearing before Justice George Okello on Monday, Kananura said some supporters were intimidated by the deployment, especially in Bweyogerere and Kireka, which he described as areas where he expected strong backing. He argued that the pressure kept some voters from reaching polling stations. The judge questioned whether that claim could be proven without testimony from the voters themselves, while the Electoral Commission’s lawyer also challenged why Musisi’s supporters would have been able to vote if the same conditions affected everyone.
Kananura also alleged that declaration forms in his possession differed from the figures later gazetted by the Electoral Commission, and said some of his agents returned unsigned forms or forms bearing unfamiliar names. He did not immediately recall his own vote total when asked in court. Musisi’s legal team disputed the claims and said they saw no need to cross-examine some of Kananura’s witnesses after reviewing their affidavits. The case matters because it could affect the outcome of a closely watched constituency contest in Kampala’s metropolitan area.
