NRM primary voting kicks off in Adjumani West

Voting has begun in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary in Adjumani West Constituency to choose the party’s flag bearer for the September 17 parliamentary by-election. Nile Post reported that the contest is being held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and is using a lining-up system in which verified party members stand behind their preferred candidate at polling centres.

Seven aspirants are seeking the NRM ticket: Richard Obuni Madrara, Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole, Justin Mawadri, Daniel Izale, Ali Kasim and James Leku Pilli. Election officials are first checking the names of registered members before counting supporters in each line. The candidate with the most support is expected to represent the party in the by-election.

The vote is being held after the death of Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and longtime MP for Adjumani West. According to the report, he died on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, and the Electoral Commission set September 17 as the date to elect his successor.

Local NRM leaders have urged calm during the process. Adjumani District NRM Chairperson Charles Akuku Anzo called on candidates and supporters to avoid bribery, intimidation and incitement, and asked party officials to remain neutral. Some voters interviewed by the outlet said they want a candidate focused on service delivery and on advocating for women, youth and older residents in the constituency.
