NRM Members to Vote Thursday for Adjumani West By-Election Candidate

Registered members of Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement in Adjumani West Constituency are due to vote on Thursday, September 3, 2026, to select the party’s flag bearer for a parliamentary by-election set for September 17. According to Nile Post, the internal contest comes after the death of Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, the longtime MP for Adjumani West and former Second Deputy Prime Minister, who died on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

The NRM primary will use the party’s lining-up system, with supporters expected to physically stand behind their preferred candidate. Seven nominees are in the race: Richard Obuni Madrara, Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole, Justin Mawadri, Daniel Izale, Ali Kasim and James Leku Pilli. Party officials said the voter register was still being updated ahead of the vote, while candidates have been campaigning across the constituency in joint activities.

The constituency includes Adjumani Town Council and several sub-counties, and the party says it has a large membership base there. Beyond the immediate race, the primary matters because it will determine who carries the NRM banner into the by-election to replace a figure who represented the area for many years.

Local party leaders have urged calm and warned against bribery, intimidation and other practices that could damage the credibility of the process. They also called on members to unite behind the winner after the primary, as the party seeks to consolidate support ahead of the Electoral Commission-run poll.
