NRM Begins Nomination of Candidates for Adjumani West By-Election

What the report says
The National Resistance Movement has begun nominating aspirants for its flag bearer in the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election, according to Nile Post. The party’s electoral process is part of its effort to choose a candidate for the seat left vacant after the death of Gen. Moses Ali, who had served as the area’s long-time MP and former First Deputy Prime Minister.
Nile Post reported that six of the seven people who had shown interest in contesting for the NRM ticket had been nominated by Monday, August 17. The nomination exercise started that day and was scheduled to run through Tuesday, August 18. It followed an earlier expression-of-interest period held from August 10 to 14, during which the seven aspirants collected nomination forms.
NRM Electoral Commission official Ambassador James Williams Kinobe said the internal nomination process was still open while the party completed its selection steps. Once the NRM settles on its flag bearer, the candidate is expected to compete against contenders from other parties and independent candidates in the by-election. The contest is significant because it will determine who fills one of the parliamentary seats in Adjumani West and shows how Uganda’s ruling party is organizing for a closely watched local race.
