Northern Uganda Volleyball Association Ushers In New Administration

Dokolo Post reports that the Uganda Volleyball Federation has dissolved the Northern Uganda Volleyball Association and overseen fresh elections after the abrupt resignation of former chairperson Varinia Dieperink last year, followed by a period of inactivity. The vote was held on Tuesday, 14 July, at Heldan Hotel in Gulu City.

Daniel Okwee, described by the publisher as a sports administrator and journalist, was elected unopposed as NUVA chairperson for a three-year term. The election was conducted by Uganda Volleyball Federation Technical Director Tonny Lakony alongside National Referee Instructor Innocent Komakech. Lakony expressed confidence in the new executive committee, citing Okwee’s experience in volleyball administration in Uganda and within CAVB Zone V.

The newly elected executive includes Maxwel Kasozi as vice chairperson, Jane Etap as general secretary, Daniel Walegu as assistant general secretary, Kelvin Kinyera as treasurer, and Francis Okot as secondary schools representative. The primary schools representative position remained pending, according to the report. Okwee said the committee’s priorities include building technical capacity and strengthening school volleyball as a pathway into clubs.

The leadership change matters because NUVA covers Acholi, Lango and Karamoja, an area Dokolo Post notes has produced prominent Ugandan volleyball figures, including Dickens Otim, Daudi Okello, Sharon Amito, Carlos Omua, Godfrey Onapa and Marino Oboke. The new executive committee is expected to meet to draw up a strategic plan for developing volleyball in the region.
