North Korea fumes over upcoming US-South Korea military drills

North Korea has sharply criticized the upcoming US-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises, calling them a provocation that raises tensions on the Korean Peninsula. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the drills are scheduled to begin on August 17 and run through August 27, with participation from about 18,000 South Korean troops and members of the US force stationed in South Korea.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson, quoted by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, said the US, South Korea and Japan are moving toward what Pyongyang described as a nuclear alliance. The statement said North Korea would answer any new threat with a stronger deterrent. The exercises are expected to include training for drone threats, GPS interference and cyberattacks, reflecting concerns about modern warfare and North Korea’s evolving military and cyber capabilities.

The report also placed the dispute in a wider security context. North Korea has recently sent troops to support Russia in its war against Ukraine, which analysts say may have given its forces battlefield experience. A spokesperson for the US and South Korean Combined Forces Command said that experience is being factored into allied training. Al Jazeera reported that Pyongyang is also seeking to strengthen its nuclear deterrent, while accusing Washington of lowering the threshold for nuclear weapons use.
