Nnaabagereka Calls on Church to Champion Moral Renewal Through the Gospel

Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda has called on the Church of Uganda to take a stronger role in guiding public values and encouraging social renewal through Gospel-based teaching. Speaking at the 28th Bishops’ Conference at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, she said the Church is well placed to help address corruption, crime and broader moral decline by promoting integrity, respect, unity and responsible citizenship.

According to Nile Post, the Buganda Queen urged church leaders to focus on preaching that strengthens families, protects human dignity and supports peaceful coexistence. She linked moral formation to practical change in society, arguing that a values-driven approach can help reduce misconduct and other social problems. She also encouraged the Church to make environmental care part of its outreach, including tree planting, rainwater harvesting and the use of cleaner energy options such as biogas.

Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu praised Nagginda’s work with young people through the Ekisaakaate programme, saying it has helped build discipline, integrity and responsibility. The conference, which gathered bishops from across the Church of Uganda, is centered on the theme “Strengthened in Christ for Unity, Resilience and Peace.” The remarks come as churches in Uganda continue to play visible roles not only in worship and pastoral care, but also in education, youth development and community mobilisation.
