NMG staff to work remotely as company assesses offices for full reopening

The Independent Uganda, citing Uganda Radio Network, reported on July 29, 2026, that Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda employees will keep working remotely while management assesses company premises before a full return to offices. The instruction followed NMG’s announcement that its television, radio, print and digital platforms had resumed operations after a weeks-long shutdown.

According to the report, staff will only be allowed back to the Namuwongo headquarters and the Serena broadcast facilities after management clears the sites. An internal human resources notice said any employees needed immediately at those locations would be contacted by supervisors with further instructions. Staff based at Commercial Plaza, which houses The EastAfrican newspaper and other departments, have been told to return physically because that site was not affected.

The Independent reported that the shutdown began on June 28, when security forces sealed the Namuwongo offices and broadcast facilities at Serena Conference Centre, disrupting operations at the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM. Security personnel reportedly remained at the locations during the closure. The company had been preparing continuity plans, with editorial teams holding virtual meetings and preparing material for publication once operations restarted.

The development matters for Uganda’s media sector because NMG operates several major news and broadcast brands, and the shutdown affected journalists, production teams, freelancers and other staff whose income depends on daily operations. The report said employees greeted the reopening with relief but also caution, while management said staff welfare and benefits would be addressed during the disruption.
