Nissan’s Brake Caliper Colors Aren’t For Decoration, They’re Ranking Your Car - Carscoops

What the report says
CarScoops reports that Nissan has outlined how its brake caliper colors function as more than a visual styling choice. According to the automaker’s U.S. division, the finishes used on Nissan brake hardware are intended to signal the level of braking capability fitted to a vehicle, ranging from ordinary road-focused systems to high-performance track-oriented setups.
The report says silver calipers are used on most Nissan models and identify braking packages meant mainly for regular driving. On the current Z, the base model uses silver two-piston calipers, while the Z Performance trim receives larger rotors and Akebono four-piston calipers finished in red. A brighter red is used on the Z Nismo, which CarScoops says gains front brake components derived from the GT-R for more demanding use.
Gold has historically been one of Nissan’s recognizable performance brake colors, first appearing on the 1999 R34 Skyline GT-R and later showing up on models such as the 350Z Track Edition and R35 GT-R. At the top of the hierarchy, yellow calipers denote carbon-ceramic brake systems designed for repeated high-temperature track use. CarScoops notes that no new Nissan currently offers yellow calipers, though recent examples included the 2020 GT-R Nismo and GT-R Track Edition.
The color-coding matters because it gives enthusiasts and buyers a quick way to identify what kind of hardware is behind the wheels. The article also notes that Porsche uses a comparable approach, with different caliper colors marking steel brakes, carbon-ceramic brakes and, in some cases, hybrid models.
