What the report says

Africa Check, published via AllAfrica from Johannesburg on 30 October 2026, said Facebook posts circulating in Nigeria were falsely presenting a message from a U.S. lobbying firm as if it were an official warning from the U.S. government about President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. The posts claimed Washington had effectively backed a free and fair vote and warned of “grave consequences” if the election were rigged.

According to the fact-check, the message actually came from Von Batten-Montague-York, a U.S.-based political advisory and lobbying firm founded by Nigerian-born consultant Karl von Batten. The firm had been hired by opposition presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar to help strengthen his reputational standing in the United States ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. Africa Check said it found no evidence of any comparable statement from the U.S. government or from President Donald Trump’s social media accounts.

The report said the claim was misleading because it reused language about Washington, D.C., and quoted the lobbying firm in a way that suggested official U.S. backing. Africa Check also said the post’s circulation, including the #Atiku2027 tag, pointed to politically motivated sharing online. The broader significance is that the claim could distort public understanding of foreign involvement in Nigeria’s election debate and of who is actually speaking on behalf of U.S. interests.
