What the report says

The Association of Resident Doctors at University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan has suspended its three-day warning strike and told members to return to duty on Thursday, according to a report published by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica. The decision was announced in a memo signed by the association’s president, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, and general secretary, Dr. Mary Awodiji.

The memo said the strike had run its course following resolutions from an emergency general meeting held on Oct. 8, and that work would resume by 8:00 a.m. on Oct. 15. Members were asked to report back to their duty posts, while the congress was expected to receive further updates in the coming days.

Vanguard reported that the doctors began the warning strike on Monday over a persistent electricity crisis and a long-running water shortage in the College of Medicine area of the hospital. The association is seeking restoration of power, repairs to faulty circuit breakers, and uninterrupted electricity supply across the facility. It had also issued a seven-day ultimatum to UCH management from Oct. 12 to Oct. 19, warning that it could escalate to an indefinite strike if its demands are not met. Such industrial actions in Nigeria’s public health sector often reflect broader disputes over infrastructure and working conditions.
