Nigeria: Troops Rescue Eight Victims, Apprehend Six ISWAP Members in Borno, Adamawa

Troops in Nigeria’s northeast have carried out a series of security operations that, according to a report cited by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica, led to the rescue of eight abducted people and the arrest of six suspected ISWAP members, along with other suspects described as terrorists, collaborators and criminal actors. The operations took place between Sept. 11 and 13 in Borno and Adamawa states, areas that have experienced repeated insurgent violence and abductions.

In Borno State, soldiers from the 82 Division Task Force Battalion rescued eight abductees near Armuda and Gava villages in Gwoza Local Government Area. The report said preliminary checks suggested the people had escaped from a terrorist enclave in Chikede. Elsewhere in the state, troops with the Civilian Joint Task Force detained suspected logistics suppliers in Konduga and Kukawa, while the report said weapons-related threats were also addressed.

In Adamawa State, troops arrested suspected terrorists in Gaya village in Hong Local Government Area and detained others in a separate raid at Soktu Hill in Song Local Government Area. The report said some of those held were accused of kidnapping victims and collecting ransom. Outside the northeast, additional arrests were reported in Kwara, Plateau, Benue and the Abuja area, including suspected illegal miners, vandals and collaborators.

The overall operation is significant because it points to continuing military pressure on insurgent supply networks, kidnapping gangs and improvised explosive device threats, as well as efforts to stabilize communities affected by conflict. The rescued people were handed to local authorities, according to the report.
