Nigeria: Tinubu Signs 2025 Budget Extension Bill Into Law

What the report says
President Bola Tinubu has signed Nigeria’s Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025 into law, giving the federal government until 31 December 2026 to carry out the capital component of the 2025 budget. The move, reported by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica, was announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga in Abuja after the National Assembly approved the amendment.
According to the report, the extension came about a day after both chambers of parliament passed the bill. It is the fourth time the spending window for the capital budget has been pushed back. The budget’s implementation period was first expected to end in December 2025, then extended in stages to March, June and September 2026 before the latest change.
The administration says the additional time is meant to help ministries, departments and agencies finish ongoing infrastructure and other capital projects already funded in the budget. Supporters argue that extending the timeline can prevent disruption to approved programmes and allow more of the money to be used for intended projects.
The repeated extensions have also drawn criticism from lawmakers and economic analysts, according to the report, because they suggest Nigeria is still struggling to complete public projects within the normal fiscal year. In broader terms, budget delays can complicate planning and execution, especially where capital spending is tied to roads, schools, hospitals and other public works.
