What the report says

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council said President Bola Tinubu has stayed committed to his 2023 promise to improve Nigeria’s electricity supply and reform the power sector. The statement, attributed to APC-PCC spokesperson Dele Alake and reported from Abuja, framed the issue as part of the administration’s broader effort to address long-standing problems in the electricity market.

According to the report, Alake argued that the government should be judged by both the original campaign pledge and the steps taken since Tinubu took office in 2023. He said those measures include the Electricity Act signed early in the administration, which opened the sector further to state participation, and actions aimed at easing legacy debt owed to power companies. The report also cited efforts to expand metering, adjust tariffs toward cost recovery, and protect lower-income users through service bands.

The statement further highlighted rural electrification projects, plans to modernize grid infrastructure, and continued work on the Presidential Power Initiative, including agreements with German partners and approvals for new transmission substations. Alake said the administration’s work on electricity remains ongoing and suggested Tinubu would present a record on the sector if he seeks a second term. More broadly, the report underscores how electricity remains a major political issue in Nigeria, where unreliable supply has long affected households and businesses.
